Philosophy & Ethics SIG Summer Retreat - 5-8th July 2020

5th to 8th Jul 2020

This year the the BPS will be holding a Summer Retreat at Rydal Hall, Cumbria 5th-8th July 2020 "Understanding Pain in a Complex World: Thinking Outside the Box".

It will be hosted by the Philosophy and Ethics Special Interest Group whose membership is made up of anaesthetists, nurses, GPs, pain clinic staff, physios, palliative care professionals, philosophers, ethicists and others. Our ongoing discussion revolves around the complexity of helping people with ongoing pain and suffering along with the wider issues of society and health. Our ideas for 2020 include the interaction between poverty, inequality and pain. At the 2019 meeting amongst other things we looked at the effect of adversity in early life and subsequent problems with chronic pain and multi morbidity.

People usually arrive on the Sunday evening in time for dinner and leave after lunch on Wednesday.

Rydal Hall is a 19th Century stately home set in 30 Acres of garden and woodland in the Lake District, not far from Ambleside.

Our meeting consists of interesting speakers, discussion sessions, good food and time off between 2 and 4pm to relax by the waterfalls and walk in the gardens, hills and parkland. Some brave people indulge in wild swimming in nearby Rydal Water.

In the evenings, we have been known to visit the nearby pub, The Badger ( complete with real badgers!)

Partners are welcome and can be accommodated.
