BPS webinar: CRIISP programme

Title: “Staying the course" – engaging and retaining people with lived experience of pain in the CRIISP programme: lessons for future research

Date: Wednesday, 12th of November 2025 18:30 - 20:00

Patient and Public involvement (PPI) in research brings a real-life perspective to research and ensures the research is relevant to, and reflective of, wider communities. The Consortium to Research Individual, Interpersonal and Social Influences in Pain (CRIISP) programme is investigating how thoughts and feelings, personal relationships and lifestyle can affect chronic pain. One work package (WP) supports public involvement in the whole programme and has actively shaped the research undertaken.

In the webinar we will describe the process of recruitment of our public contributors (PCs), through advertisements using accessible language shared with community organisations, pain charities, local networks and via social media.

We will describe lessons learned, including optimising collaborative working and recruiting, supporting and retaining of PCs. This model will help other research teams to maximise the potential of the public voice in future research. We will open discussion for workshop participants to share their experiences of PPI in their research and produce infographics from the workshop with ‘key lessons’ learned and ‘top tips’ for researchers.

Organiser: Professor Carolyn Chew-Graham OBE.

Chairs: Joanne Lloyd. Public Contributor Co-investigator CRIISP programme, Chair CPAG (Consortium Public Advisory Group).
